The Hampshire library service until relatively recently had no late charges for children, and this was the case for many years.
I know I should return the books on time, and I know its my responsibility. However having fines for kids books does put me off borrowing them, so I can only imagine how much it discourages families on an even tighter budget.
We regularly have 30 or so items at home with:
6 or 7 audio CDs for Aidan to listen to as he falls asleep
several baby board books for Elliot to play with/ to have read at bedtime
Bedtime fun books for Aidan, Alex, and Cat
Aidans awfull horrible star wars comics.
Reading books for all 3 of the big kids.
We have email notifications when books are due back, and as yet we have only once had to pay a fine for a couple of books, but god help us if we return the majority of the books late. The library service will have to take the house to cover the fines!
